Seven Bharathidasan University researchers have landed in the Stanford–Elsevier 2025 global ranking of the top two percent of scientists, putting the Tiruchi institution’s research output in the international spotlight.

Stanford University and Elsevier have placed seven scientists from Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, in their 2025 list of the world’s top two percent. The selection process leans on citation counts, h-index, and authorship metrics, pushing the university’s research profile into global view.

The Stanford–Elsevier ranking covers every scientific discipline. It weighs up citation numbers, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted indices, and where a researcher appears in the author list. The 2025 roster includes M. Lakshmanan (Physics), N. Thajuddin (Microbiology), M. Palaniandavar (Chemistry), M. Sathiyabama (Botany), R. Rajaram (Marine Science), T.C. Sabari Girisun (Physics), and P. Chellapandi (Bioinformatics) from Bharathidasan University.

For the 2025 edition, 6,236 researchers were recognized for their annual scientific impact, while 3,371 were listed for career-long influence, according to India Today.

India Today

Professor Lakshmanan and Professor Thajuddin appear in both the career-long and single-year categories. Professor Palaniandavar is recognized for career-long impact. Professor Sathiyabama, Professor Rajaram, Dr. Sabari Girisun, and Professor Chellapandi are named for their single-year achievements in 2025. This split shows both sustained and recent research strength inside the university’s labs.

Stanford and Elsevier build the ranking to highlight researchers shaping global science. Their method tracks multiple citation and authorship metrics, capturing both long-term influence and recent breakthroughs. The Tribune reports that the Stanford–Elsevier database uses standardized bibliometric indicators: citation counts, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, authorship positions, and a composite c-score. Researchers are sorted into 20 major scientific fields and 174 subcategories.

This recognition lands as Indian scientists see more international attention. Bharathidasan University’s faculty span physics and chemistry as well as marine science and bioinformatics, showing the institution’s reach. The Blavatnik Awards have also flagged the global competition for research distinction.

Seven scientists from a single university making the world’s top two percent signals a research culture that delivers high-impact work across fields. Bharathidasan University’s name now sits in the same data set as the world’s most cited researchers.

The Stanford–Elsevier list is compiled from Scopus data and published as the 'Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators,' with separate categories for cumulative career impact and single-year performance.
