KIRCT opened its Advanced Bioinformatics Workshop in Kano on 14 October 2026.
The Kano Independent Research Centre Trust says its facilities let scientists carry out advanced research in Kano without travelling abroad. Board of Trustees chairman Prof. Aliyu Abdu said the Centre will continue developing research and services to address health challenges across Nigeria, including Kano, and beyond its borders.
Training young scientists to conduct impactful research is part of KIRCT’s mandate, Abdu said. He urged participants to use what they learn for the benefit of humanity. The workshop is designed to build their research skills.
KIRCT researchers work in genomics and breast cancer research. The Centre also studies antimicrobial resistance, while vaccine research is another focus. Abdu said KIRCT has established collaborations with research institutions within and outside the region, and plans to expand those ties globally.
The training focus differs from the bioinformatics platform development covered in a related report on MitoCareX Bio’s plans to add disease-pathway analysis to its discovery platform. Leadership reported on KIRCT’s workshop. THISDAY reported on the Centre’s research programme and institutional collaborations.
Abdu praised the range of people taking part, particularly the workshop’s gender distribution. He thanked Pfizer Inc. and the Kano State Government for supporting the Centre, and commended KIRCT’s Board and management for the progress made.
Dr. Ibrahim Musa Idris, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Health Services and a member of the Board of Trustees, reaffirmed the state government’s support. He said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration was pleased with the Centre’s progress and expressed optimism that it would gain global recognition for innovative health solutions. Idris urged participants to make the most of the training.
